It’s no overstatement that Black-owned U.S. businesses are in a state of crisis due to the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic. From February to April of this year alone, 440,000 Black-owned businesses closed their doors permanently, with thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in worker income lost.

As a step toward helping black-owned businesses recover and move forward, a coalition of four business advocacy groups — the National Minority Supplier Development Council, US Black Chambers, National Urban League and Black Enterprise — have partnered with JPMorgan Chase to launch Advancing Black Entrepreneurs by Chase for Business.

By the time Adrienne C. Trimble became the president and chief executive officer for the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) in 2018, she had received numerous accolades for her work in diversity and inclusion over her nearly 20 years at Toyota Motor North America.

For 22 years, TNJ has consistently recognized “trailblazing Black women professionals and entrepreneurs,” such as accomplished and respected CEO and President of NMSDC, Adrienne Trimble.

Employers around the country have varying definitions of what it means to be a diverse company. For the restaurant chain Denny’s, it includes a special focus on supplier diversity.

NMSDC President and CEO Adrienne Trimble challenged business leaders to “Not only lend a hand to our minority business enterprises but to take definitive action and stand up against the systemic racial barriers plaguing our society.”

A handful of socially conscious major companies have long played a role in addressing racial injustice through supplier diversity programs that promote an inclusive approach to procurement.

The Chicago Minority Supplier Development Council is responsible for certifying, advocating, developing and connecting minority businesses with major buying organizations.

While 7% of White business owners get a loan in their first year of business, only 1% of Black business owners do so. There are, however, resources available for Black-owned businesses. Here are seven that can help, especially amid the pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic and civil protests have put many Black-owned businesses across the U.S. at risk of permanent closure. To support these businesses, the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) launched the “In This Together” campaign.

For some Black-owned business owners in the Philadelphia, the BLM movement has helped their companies, and created new opportunities.

The National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) held its 2015 Business Conference and Expo at the San Diego Convention Center from October 18-21. The four-day event brought together over 6,000 minority suppliers and representatives from some of America’s largest corporations.

NMSDC retained The Institute for Thought Diversity to conduct a study to assess the economic impact that the NMSDC MBE community has on the United States economy (and Puerto Rico).
